Having a baby is a wonderful experience, and having the support of a midwife or nurse after childbirth provides reassurance.

All about the costs of services

Most of the costs are covered by Swiss health insurance companies.

Registration

Registration is simple: we will organize a midwife or nurse for you following childbirth – for a good start after your baby is born.

Our additional services

In addition to postnatal care, we organize various additional services relating to pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

Why do I need a midwife or nurse after childbirth?

The midwife or nurse will come to your home and support you and your family. She will support you in tending to your baby and answer questions concerning healthcare. She will also help you to recover after childbirth, especially if you have pain or difficulties with breastfeeding. She will also carry out important examinations on your baby, such as newborn screening, and will be there for you with advice and support.

Overview of the services provided by midwives and nurses

Independent midwives and nurses have undergone professional training and have several years of practical experience in a maternity clinic. In order to guarantee the quality of care, Familystart Zurich only refers midwives and nurses who are accredited by their professional association.

In the initial 56 days following childbirth, a midwife or nurse will visit you at home for up to 10 consultations. If it is your first child, a multiple birth or a caesarean section, this may be up to 16 visits. The exact number of visits varies according to the health of the mother and child and will be determined by the midwife or nurse. If your child remains in hospital after delivery or is transferred to the children’s hospital, care can also be organized there or in a parents’ room.

The midwife or nurse will help you to recover fully after labour. She will pay attention to how your body is recovering and whether birth injuries are healing. She will also give you tips on how to take good care of yourself. She will share information about other centres to seek advice from, talk to other mums and make new contacts.

The midwife or nurse will support you in caring for your newborn and give you valuable tips. In the initial days, she will keep an eye on your baby’s health, development, drinking behaviour, excretions and weight. She will also check that the navel is healing well and inform you about upcoming examinations at the paediatrician.

The midwife or nurse is an important contact person for the whole family. She will give you lots of tips and answer your questions, even if worries or issues arise. If you feel unsure about how to deal with your baby or suddenly feel sad, she can help you find further support.
The midwife or nurse also promotes the development of the parent-child relationship and the bonding of the new family. If necessary, she will involve partners, siblings or other relatives in caring for mother and child.

How do I register and what happens afterwards?

You can easily register by filling in our online form. As soon as we have received your registration, we will look for a suitable midwife or nurse for you as quickly as possible. You will be informed by e-mail as soon as we have found someone. The midwife or nurse will then arrange appointments with you directly for visits to your home and support you in the postnatal period.

The assignment of your midwife or nurse is based on their availability and proximity to your place of residence or stay during the postpartum period.

Our midwives and nurses communicate mainly in German. Other languages are possible. Please indicate your native language and any other languages you can communicate in. We try to accommodate language preferences, but cannot guarantee it.

We cannot accommodate preferences such as the age, marital status or origin of the midwife or nurse. At Familystart Zurich, you are not given a choice and are not provided with lists of contact details for different midwives and nurses. This would take up too much time and keep the midwives and nurses unnecessarily busy.

A personal meeting before the birth is at the discretion of the midwife or nurse and should not be regarded as standard. There may be additional costs that are not covered by health insurance. Ask your midwife or nurse.

As soon as you have registered with Familystart Zurich, you should stop your own search for a midwife or nurse. This avoids double placements and unnecessary additional costs. The midwife or nurse will keep capacity free for you upon successful placement.

What costs can I expect?

If you live in the city of Zurich or give birth in one of our partner hospitals, the arrangement is free of charge. Otherwise we charge CHF 50.00. Health insurance companies normally cover the costs of postnatal care provided by midwives or specialised nurses. An on-call allowance or deductible may apply. The midwife or nurse can give you more information on this.

The placement fee is CHF 50.00. This fee is waived if:

  • You live in the city of Zürich
  • You give birth in one of our partner hospitals:
    University Hospital Zürich
    Triemli City Hospital
    Zollikerberg Hospital
    Cantonal Hospital Winterthur
    Bülach Hospital
    Limmattal Hospital
Postpartum care is covered by women’s basic insurance without affecting the deductible. However, please note that the so-called waiting fee (on-call compensation) and the deductible are not covered depending on the municipality. Additional costs may apply for extra services. Ask your midwife or nurse about this.

On-call fee for midwives: Your midwife is available at any time for several weeks. This on-call time is not covered by basic insurance. Some municipalities cover the costs of CHF 115.00 (in the canton of Zurich).

Deductible for nurses: If you are cared for by a nurse after childbirth, in some municipalities you have to pay a co-payment of CHF 7.65 per visit (in the canton of Zurich). If your municipality does not cover these costs, you will have to pay the midwife or nurse directly. If you have any questions, please contact your midwife or nurse.

What other services and additional offers are available?

Many midwives and nurses offer supportive courses for the time before and after birth. In the cities of Zurich and Winterthur, we can also organize an interpreter service for visits by the midwife or nursing professional. Additionally, care during pregnancy as well as for stillbirth or child loss is possible.

Our midwives and nurses mainly speak German. Other languages are possible. If you live in the city of Zurich or in Winterthur, we can help you organize an interpreter for free. If you don’t speak German, please ask a person you trust to assist you with translation.

Instead of being cared for by a gynecologist, you can also be cared for by a midwife during pregnancy. For this, you need a medical prescription. Midwives who offer pregnancy check-ups also care for high-risk pregnancies. The collaboration between doctor and midwife ensures comprehensive care.

Losing a child during pregnancy, birth or the postpartum period is a far-reaching and painful experience. During this difficult time, the midwife is there to support you and your family as a trusted companion. She will carry out the necessary examinations and support you sensitively in your personal grieving process.

Many of our midwives and nursing professionals offer additional services and courses in addition to postpartum care.
